Kingdom of Cambodia: The history and origins of KRAMA

What good is this piece of cloth so famous in Cambodia?

The krama is a piece of checked fabric. The krama is a pure heritage of Khmer culture. Worn and used in a thousand ways, the krama is closely linked to the daily lives of Cambodians and its functions are many: scarf, headgear to protect the sun, belt, sarong, hammock, baby carrier ...

It is worn indifferently in all environments, by men and women, children and the elderly ... Very widespread in the countryside, cotton kramas are often worn by farmers in rice fields, often dull or dark colors. But krama is also very common in cities. It is a true sartorial identity, a national symbol.

Its historical origins date back to the Angkor period. A Chinese ambassador, Chou Ta-Kuan, wrote during a visit to Angkor in the 13th century: "Every man or woman wears around his waist a strip of cloth, on which a larger piece is tied when they leave their place. House ".

With what fabric do we make Kramas?

It is woven by women on traditional crafts. In the countryside, women often weave kramas for additional income after the rice season. The krama is traditionally woven with cotton or silk. Cotton and silk from Cambodia were very famous for their high quality.

Traditional production centers are located in Kampong Cham provinces for cotton scarves and Takéo for silk scarves, but kramas are found throughout Cambodia, even in the smallest provincial market. The cotton krama is in common use while the silk krama is worn mainly on religious holidays; we then choose its color according to the event.

What colors and what are the dimensions of kramas?

The original patterns are simple small squares or checkers, formed by crossing and white stripes of a different color, typically red, blue or purple. Originally, each province possessed its own color of krama, making it possible to identify the region from which the bearer was born. This is still the case for example with Thleah kramas from the village of Baseth. Today, there is a very wide choice of colors. The warp threads are often terminated by knots, and thin strips of another color sometimes come out of the pattern.

The typical size of Krama is about 70 x 140 cm, up to large models cotton up to 190cm in length 80 width. Large kramas cotton are sometimes worn sarong and find a multitude of uses in the daily lives of Cambodians. Silk kramas are generally narrower. The size of a krama is a function of the width of the loom used.
